The pros and cons of running a business
25/06/2024
Running your own business is a path that can be a highly effective way of fulfilling your dreams. It is also a path full of independence and flexibility, which brings immense satisfaction to many people every day. However, it is by no means a bed of roses. It also involves numerous risks and drawbacks, which we are not always aware of. In this article, we outline the pros and cons – that is, the most important advantages and disadvantages – of running your own business.
The benefits of setting up a business: the advantages of running your own business (advantages of a sole trader)
Let’s start with the positives. Running your own business offers a number of undeniable advantages and benefits. Among the most important of these are:
- The opportunity to realise your dreams and aspirations;
- The satisfaction of working for yourself;
- The chance to improve your financial situation and, in theory, no limits on your earnings;
- A high degree of flexibility and independence in shaping your working environment (including where and when you work), as well as your business strategy;
- The opportunity for personal development;
- No costs involved in setting up a business;
- The opportunity to benefit from the ‘start-up relief’ (i.e. a scheme for those starting a business, which allows for a six-month exemption from social security contributions (excluding health insurance)), and later also from preferential contribution rates and the ‘Mały ZUS+’ scheme;
- Job security;
- Greater work efficiency;
- The opportunity to benefit from numerous tax reliefs, exemptions and tax optimisation measures;
- The ability to deduct income-related expenses from your income;
- The ability to delegate tasks and responsibilities that one dislikes or at which one is inefficient;
- The ability to choose your own colleagues;
- Gaining experience that may pay dividends in the future.
Disadvantages of running a business
However, running your own business is not just about benefits and advantages; it also comes with a number of significant disadvantages. These include, first and foremost:
- Costs (related to social security contributions, taxes and the wages of any employees);
- Lack of employee benefits (i.e. paid leave, social benefits or overtime pay);
- Irregular working hours;
- No guarantee of business success;
- Irregular and often unpredictable profits, with no lower limit (which, for many people, is synonymous with a lack of security and stability);
- The need to deal with all the necessary paperwork and keep accounting records, as well as to settle taxes and social security contributions on time (which requires at least a basic understanding of the law or the need to pay third parties to carry out these tasks);
- Legal and financial liability (both for oneself and for any employees);
- The need to constantly compete for customers;
- The possibility of dealing with unreliable business partners;
- Potential difficulties in securing funding (particularly at the outset);
- The need to constantly adapt to an ever-changing legal and economic environment;
- Delays in the payment of invoices;
- A lower pension.
Self-employment – pros and cons (advantages and disadvantages of running a business), or: is it worth it?
Running your own business is a path that many people choose to take every year. So is it worth it? This question must remain unanswered, as everyone is different and everyone has different desires, life priorities and ways of looking at the world.
For some, flexibility, independence and the absence of a salary cap are advantages that make running a business superior to other forms of earning a living.
For others, however, the benefits of a permanent job and the certainty of a pay cheque at the end of each month will be more important.
Regardless of your priorities and the way in which you earn and wish to earn money, it is worth being aware of the potential benefits and costs of running your own business.
A detailed analysis of the pros and cons of running your own business mentioned above can broaden your horizons and change the way you view the world, and perhaps even prompt you to decide to change your life path…
