FEES – SOLE TRADER BUSINESS ACTIVITY

19/03/2023

The fees involved in setting up a sole trader business depend on the sector in which you wish to operate. A sole trader business is the most popular and simplest option to run. You’ll find out what costs you should expect when setting one up.

Cost of setting up a business in 2023

Registering such a business is completely free of charge. You complete the CEIDG-1 application form and submit it to the local council or town hall. You can hand it in in person or submit it online. However, once you have your business up and running, there will certainly be further costs associated with it. These include, for example, social security contributions and taxes.

You should also bear in mind the additional costs involved in setting up a sole trader business. These include, for example:

  • The cost of hiring an accountant or using accounting software;
  • The cost of having a company stamp made;
  • The cost of maintaining a business bank account.

The cost of hiring an accountant is around 330–460 zł to start with. If there are a larger number of documents, this may change and amount to as much as PLN 920–1,300. Using an accounting software programme, on the other hand, costs anywhere from a few dozen to over PLN 200. These are, of course, monthly amounts.

Having a medium-sized company stamp made will cost you between 36 and as much as 63 zł. A basic, small stamp, on the other hand, costs 25 zł.

Simply opening and maintaining a bank account is very often free of charge. However, banks tend to charge fees for various transactions, such as using a card, withdrawing cash from an ATM, or making a transfer to ZUS or the tax office. You can sometimes avoid these fees if, for example, you carry out transactions up to a certain amount or have a specific level of monthly income. It’s worth reading the terms and conditions offered by the bank carefully before you sign the agreement. It’s also a good idea to check a business account comparison guide, which compares the offers from several or even a dozen or so banks.

Costs associated with setting up a business – administrative and tax charges?

This category includes taxes and social security contributions. To find out exactly how much your monthly payments will be, you can use a special online calculator. This allows you to quickly get an idea of the approximate costs. Remember, however, that right at the start of running a sole trader business, you can take advantage of the so-called start-up relief. In that case, your only obligation is to pay health insurance contributions. The minimum amount is 270.90 zł. You can benefit from the start-up relief for the first six months from the date of registering your sole trader business.

Currently, the so-called ‘small ZUS’ contribution stands at 263.59 zł. In 2023, it will rise to 305.61 zł (January–June) and 315.26 zł (July–December). The health insurance contribution and the full ZUS contribution will also increase automatically (without sickness insurance, they will amount to 1,316.54 PLN + the 2023 health insurance contribution, and with sickness insurance, 1,418.48 PLN + the 2023 health insurance contribution)
